This paper is being written as a contribution to “Media Evolution and Genre Expectations,” a special issue of the journal Discourse, Context and Media (guest editors: Tuomo Hiippala & Chiao-I Tseng ) that focuses on ways in which traditional genres are affected by being adapted for new media platforms.Ībstract: John Grierson, the pioneer practitioner-cum-theorists of documentary film, famously described the genre as “the creative treatment of actuality.” The “actuality” part of this pithy definition refers to the idea that documentaries portray aspects of the world that are somehow “real,” as opposed to fiction films, which portray somehow imagined, fictional worlds.
